# 10 Ways to Maintain Friendships as an Adult

Josh Caliguire · Oct 6, 2026

![how to maintain friendship as an adult](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/e_upscale/c_fill,ar_16:9,g_auto,w_1200/f_auto,q_auto/blog/featured/10-ways-to-maintain-friendships-as-an-adult)

A phone full of good intentions and zero follow-through. Lots of contacts, social media friends, but an empty calendar when it comes to my friends, and a lot of nervousness when it comes to meeting new people.

Who's got time anyways? Yet... loneliness feels horrible. What do I do?

Maintaining friendships as an adult isn't about having more free time. Time was never really the problem. It's a handful of small, repeatable things, done on purpose, over and over.

## 1. Build your friendships around a few key words

A while back I picked four words to build my friendships around: Consistency, Honesty, Priority, Generosity. Not a system, just something to measure myself against.

Consistency looks like Nathan and I walking with his stroller every week, rain or shine. It looks like Kyo and me at the same diner, same booth, most Tuesdays. My friend Colter and I even named our early morning hangs, "Early Mornings," just so it had a slot on the calendar and a name worth protecting.

Pick your own four words if mine don't fit. The point is having something simple enough to actually check yourself against, instead of a vague feeling that you should "be a better friend."

## 2. Let the group pull you along, don't rely on willpower alone

Community isn't the reward for getting your life together. It's often the thing that gets you moving in the first place. Like yeast in bread, it's the catalyst, not the result.

Jonathan Haidt makes a version of this case in *The Anxious Generation*: we didn't just lose free time, we lost the shared, unsupervised, in-person togetherness that used to happen by default. Nobody replaced it. We just absorbed the loss.

If you're stuck, stop trying to discipline your way out of it alone. Find the people, and let them be the catalyst.

## 3. Build a system, don't trust your memory

For years I only remembered to check in on friends when I happened to scroll past their name in a DM thread. Otherwise, out of sight, out of mind. No falling out, no fight. Just time, drifting, until reaching out started to feel weird.

The fix, embarrassingly simple: I spreadsheeted it. Wrote down every person I wanted to stay close to, in one place, where I'd actually see them. That spreadsheet turned into a real project, **[Frelio](https://frelioapp.com/)**, an app my friend Daniel and I built so neither of us has to rely on memory to be a good friend.

You don't need an app. You need a place, any place, where your people live outside your own head.

## 4. Focus on remembering new people's names.

A pilot named Andrew once gave me a masterclass in this without meaning to, introducing himself with full eye contact and using my name back to me twice in the first minute. I've never forgotten him.

Most of us do the opposite. We're so busy managing our own nerves in the first ten seconds of meeting someone that the name goes in one ear and out the other. Then we spend the rest of the conversation half-listening, panicking about the name we already lost.

The mentalist Oz Pearlman has a handful of tricks for this: repeat the name out loud right away, attach it to something visual, use it again before you part ways. Small moves. They work.

A name is the cheapest way to tell someone they matter. Use it.

## 5. Make the bar for hanging out stupidly low

Hospitality doesn't have to be a dinner party. It can be a kettle, a few cups, and twenty minutes. I've made tea for people in Mazatlán, in Boulder, in Alberta, different kitchens, same ritual, and it's one of the fastest ways I know to turn an acquaintance into a friend.

Gong Fu Cha works especially well for this because it's slow by design. You're not supposed to rush it. Neither is the conversation.

Lower the bar for "come over." You'll use the invite a lot more often if it doesn't require a whole production.

## 6. Find a way to just be near people while you work

I'm highly socially motivated, probably ADHD, and I genuinely cannot focus well alone. Turns out a lot of people are wired this way and just didn't have a word for it.

I started booking Focusmate sessions, video calls where a stranger and you just work quietly in parallel, and it changed how I get things done. It's not really about the task. It's proof that even "just existing near someone" counts as connection.

Friendship doesn't always need a conversation. Sometimes it just needs company.

## 7. Take an honest look at how tech has changed your friendships

Smartphones, social media, the pandemic, AI, it's all rewired how we connect in a shockingly short amount of time. Most of us never stopped to ask what that cost us.

You don't have to quit your phone. You just have to notice when it's replacing real contact instead of supporting it.

## 8. Make the first move, every time

Talking to new people is risky. First impressions are nerve-racking, awkward interactions happen constantly, and there's a lot of guessing involved. None of that changes with practice. You just get more willing to do it anyway.

Most friendships I value now started with someone, usually me, saying the slightly awkward thing first. "Hey, want to grab coffee sometime?" "This might be random, but." It's always a little embarrassing. It's never not worth it.

**[Blog: How to Talk to People: 5 Tips for Making New Friends](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-talk-to-new-people?hsLang=en)**

## 9. Protect one small weekly habit like it's sacred

Big gestures feel more meaningful, but they're not what keeps a friendship alive. A repeatable, boring, weekly habit does more work than a once-a-year trip ever will.

The habit matters less than the fact that it's weekly and it's protected. Put it on the calendar like you would a dentist appointment. Don't negotiate with yourself about it.

## 10. Get curious about people again

Somewhere between being a kid and being an adult, most of us stopped finding people delightful. We got efficient instead. Polite instead of curious. Transactional instead of amazed that this stranger has an entire life we know nothing about.

Getting that sense of wonder back is maybe the single biggest unlock for actually wanting to maintain friendships, instead of just managing them.

## Homework: Start Maintaining One Friendship This Week

Don't try all ten. Pick one. Text the person you've been meaning to text. Put a weekly walk on the calendar. Write down the name you just know you're going to forget.

Friendship isn't maintained by a big plan. It's maintained by the next small, slightly inconvenient thing you actually do.

Much love,
Josh
