Best Coffee Shops in Mazatlan: My Top Picks for Nearby Coffee

best coffee shops in Mazatlan

Mazatlán has changed in the past decade. A lot.

If you've spent any time here over the years, you've watched it happen in real time. The city has been in a boom. New restaurants, new boutique hotels, new energy in the downtown. Every time I take a walk in the Centro Histórico I see a new shop opening. I smell more roasters, mixed with scents of cilantro and carne asada. Ahh.

And one of the most exciting places that boom is showing up? Coffee.

In the last five to ten years, a new generation of entrepreneurs has sprung up in Mazatlán with serious coffee ambitions. The market for artisanal, specialty coffee is growing fast here, and the city has answered with roasters, cafés, and restaurants that can hold their own, and with good prices and fresh food to accompany.

I live in the Centro area, which puts me close to some of the best. But I've made my rounds around the city too.

These are my top picks for any coffee lover who wants good drinks, good atmosphere, and a genuine experience.

What makes Cafferium stand out is their commitment to offering the full range of brewing methods. Every method on that list is an invitation to explore.

Cafferium offers:

  • French Press
  • V60/Kalita
  • AeroPress
  • That crazy japanese gravity tube system
  • Espresso

Multiple systems, multiple beans. Really hospitable.

They've been roasting their own beans for a long time in Mazatlán. That history shows. They have earned my respect and my friendship over the years, and I genuinely love going to visit them and work from there, or meet with a friend. I pick up a new bag each time, and hang the bag on the wall after because it's always pretty.

They also have a great flat white.

There's something rare about a place in Mazatlán where you can order just a black coffee or a straight espresso and really love it. I appreciate that they serve espresso with seltzer water.

Always paired well with their chilaquiles, which are always perfect.

They have a garden and fountain space out back, and a couple of different nooks where you can bring a friend and lose an afternoon. It's the kind of place you come for coffee and stay for the conversation.

Hunters and Roasters - For Best Beans
De La Mojarra 13, Sábalo Country, 82100 Mazatlán, Sin.

These guys are just getting started, and I am so excited for them.

Out of everyone I've come across in Mazatlán, Hunters and Roasters have leaned the hardest into single-origin roasting. They are not playing it safe with generic dark roast.

They are sourcing interesting, adventurous beans and doing something wild with them. The result is some of the fruitiest, most distinctive coffee I've had in the city.

The first time I walked in, they handed me an espresso before I even ordered. That tells you everything about who they are.

I met Guillermo, the main roaster and owner, that day. He is a big sweetie, clearly obsessed with his craft, and excited to talk about what he's building. That passion comes through in every cup.

The shop is tucked into the neighborhood of Sabalo Country, a little hidden, a little off the beaten path. It's in the Golden Zone (Zona Dorada), a few streets back from the towers.

Their prices are extremely competitive, and the quality is above what you'll find from most roasters. I'd highly recommend buying a few bags to take home. You will not be disappointed.

Believe it or not, I found out about this place from my chiropractor. We talk coffee sometimes, and one day he just gave me two half kilo bags. Um, ok!

Casa Hindie - For Best Brunch, Lattes, and Vibes

Constitución 620 Centro, Mazatlán 82000 México

Casa Hindie stole my heart from the moment they opened their store near Plaza Machado a few years ago.

As soon as I walked in, I felt at home.

I have been graced to know the owners for several years now, and they are the real deal. Warm, thoughtful, deeply passionate about what they're building. Surfers, entrepreneurs, pros.

They started as a thriving tea business in Monterrey, Mexico, and made the decision to move to the ocean side in Mazatlán and pair their passion for gastronomy with not only quality loose-leaf tea, but the tea culture behind it.

Tea ceremonies and everything. That last part is a huge passion of mine, so you can imagine what happened to my heart when I found out.

You can learn more about tea ceremonies at my blog here.

Pairing well with their fresh roasted coffee, Casa Hindie has all of the brunch vibes you could ever dream of, and I will go on record saying they have arguably the best bread in Mazatlán. That is a big claim in a city with great food. But bread isn't a Mazatlan strength, or at least it hasn't been until all these new businesses are crushing!

Go try theirs and tell me I'm wrong.

What I'm especially excited about right now is that they are just starting to source their own coffee beans, starting with one from Veracruz, and I'm very happy and impressed with the immediate quality.

They not only make great coffee drinks, but thoughtful pairings with loose-leaf teas from their own line.

And of course, matcha. If you are looking for matcha in Mazatlán, Casa Hindie is my top pick without hesitation.

This place has it all. Go visit them.

Totem Barrio - For Best Location and Hangout Spot

C. Heriberto Frías 1504, Centro, 82000 Mazatlán, Sin.

Totem came onto the scene in 2018, and they have built one of the most impressive coffee shop layouts I've seen in Mazatlán. Full stop.

It's a multi-story space, designed very creatively, with a bustling open kitchen and a see-through window so you can watch the action near the brick pizza oven. The whole ground floor has amazing lighting and that perfect balance of lively and comfortable. But then you walk upstairs.

The patio up there is something else. It is genuinely one of the most outstanding outdoor spaces I've sat on in this city. It catches the downtown breeze, which makes it a pleasure basically all year long. It's one of those places that feels great whether you're catching up with an old friend or bringing someone new to the city for the first time. Big energy, good vibes, easy conversation.

Their food has grown into something special too. The steak tacos and their cocktails are creative and delicious, and they are now sourcing two different coffee beans that I've been very impressed with.

Even just ordering a cappuccino in the evening while watching the street below and talking to their kind waiters. It's a pleasure every time.

One more thing: you'll notice they use a La Marzocco espresso machine behind the bar.

For those who don't know, La Marzocco is the gold standard in commercial espresso equipment. It's the kind of machine serious coffee shops invest in when they are ready to be taken seriously.

Mazatlán is growing in its specialty coffee scene. Whether you're visiting for a week, on a cruise day off, or you live here like I do, these are the places I'd send you first.

Go explore. Tell them Josh sent you.
