Yerba Mate

# Best Thermos for Drinking Yerba Mate All Day: The Stanley Classic

![Pouring hot water from a thermos into a yerba mate gourd](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_fill,ar_16:9,g_auto,w_1200/f_auto,q_auto/blog/best-thermos-for-yerba-mate/pouring-thermos-into-yerba-mate-gourd)

I research and test everything I recommend. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission on purchases through my links. Your price stays the same, and I get to keep the mate flowing. Win-win.

If you drink yerba mate from a gourd, **the thermos matters almost as much as the yerba.** A traditional session is dozens of small refills over an hour or more, and every one of them needs water at the right temperature.

Over the years, I have used many different containers to hold water, with more than a few experiences of burning myself and things exploding. It happens! Over the years, I have used many different containers to hold water, with more than a few experiences of burning myself and things exploding. It happens!

Let's get straight to it. My pick is the [Stanley Classic 1.1 qt](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FZX93K?tag=joshcaliguire-20), with one small upgrade that turns it into a proper mate thermos. Here's why, and what I'd buy instead if you want something built for mate out of the box.

## Why a Thermos Matters for Yerba Mate

Mate is brewed hot but not boiling. Most people aim for around **158 to 176°F (70 to 80°C)**. Go hotter and the leaf scorches, which is the fastest way to a bitter gourd. I go deeper on that in [Blog: How to Make Yerba Maté Less Bitter](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-make-yerba-mat%C3%A9-less-bitter?hsLang=en).

You heat the water once, fill the thermos, and refill the gourd from it all session. A good thermos **holds that temperature for hours**, so the last refill tastes as good as the first. A bad one either cools off in an hour or keeps the water so hot you scald the yerba.

It also makes mate portable. Thermos, gourd, bag of yerba, and you can take a session to the park, the office, or a road trip. That's how most of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay drink it every day.

## My Pick: Stanley Classic 1.1 qt

The [Stanley Classic](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FZX93K?tag=joshcaliguire-20) is the green thermos you've probably seen at a campsite. It's also one of the most common thermoses in South American mate culture, and for good reason.

[![Stanley Classic 1.1 qt vacuum bottle in Hammertone Green](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,c_pad,ar_16:10,b_white,w_1200/blog/best-thermos-for-yerba-mate/stanley-classic-1-1-qt-thermos-hammertone-green)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FZX93K?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

**It holds heat for a very long time.** Stanley rates it to keep drinks hot for up to 24 hours. For mate you only need a few, which means your water is still in range at the end of a long afternoon.

**The size is right for one or two people.** At about 35 ounces (roughly a liter), it covers a full session for you, or a shared round with a friend. If you host bigger rounds, the [2 qt version](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FZX93U?tag=joshcaliguire-20) is the same bottle, bigger.

**It's nearly indestructible.** 18/8 stainless steel, a powder-coated finish, and a collapsible handle. People hand these down. The lid doubles as a cup, which is handy if you switch to tea later in the day.

I don't own a Stanley myself, but I've shared plenty of mate poured from friends' Stanleys. It's easy to see why it's the thermos everyone gets excited about: it's simple, it's tough, and the water stays hot round after round.

## The One Flaw (and the Fix)

Out of the box, the Stanley's stopper pours a wide, fast stream. That's fine for coffee. For mate it's a problem, because **a gush of water floods the gourd**, washes the yerba around, and clogs your bombilla.

Mate drinkers solve this with a *pico cebador*, a pour spout that gives you a thin, controlled stream you can aim at one spot in the gourd. You can swap the Stanley's stopper for a [pico de mate replacement stopper](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BXZ6GNKW?tag=joshcaliguire-20) that screws right in. It fits the 1.1, 1.5, and 2 qt Classics.

[![Pico de mate pour spout stopper on a Stanley thermos pouring a thin stream](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/best-thermos-for-yerba-mate/pico-de-mate-stopper-stanley-pouring)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BXZ6GNKW?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

That one swap is what turns a great camping thermos into a great mate thermos. Keep the original stopper for coffee days.

## Who Should Get Something Else

**If you want a mate thermos with no add-ons,** the [BALIBETOV Mate Thermal Flask](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F3PHQLXP?tag=joshcaliguire-20) comes with two spouts: a mate spout for the gourd and a regular one for everything else. Same liter-ish size, made for this from the start. BALIBETOV also makes the starter gourd and bombilla set I link in my bitterness guide, so the two pair well. If you want to pick a gourd yourself, see [Blog: The Best Yerba Mate Gourd and Bombilla](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/the-best-yerba-mate-gourd-and-bombilla?hsLang=en).

**If you want the classic Argentine choice,** look at Lumilagro's Luminox thermoses. Lumilagro is one of the best-known thermos brands in Argentina, though selection on Amazon US is thin.

**If you'd rather skip the gourd entirely,** self-serving mate bottles are a growing trend. The [Tuma Tu Mate Automate](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F3XB5D88?tag=joshcaliguire-20) keeps the yerba inside a filter in the bottle, so you add water and sip. It's built for commuting more than for the slow ritual, and it's a fun option for the car or the gym.

## How to Use a Thermos for Mate

![Traditional yerba mate gourd filled with yerba and a bombilla](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/best-thermos-for-yerba-mate/traditional-yerba-mate-gourd-bombilla)

**Heat to temperature first, then fill.** A temperature-control kettle makes this easy: set it to around 165°F and pour straight into the thermos.

**Preheat the thermos** with a splash of hot water for a minute, dump it, then fill. It holds temperature noticeably longer.

**Pour against one side of the gourd,** near the bombilla, and keep the dry yerba on the other side dry as long as you can. That's how a session stays flavorful for longer.

**It works cold, too.** Fill it with ice water and you have *tereré*, Paraguay's cold mate. If you're into cold mate, see [Blog: Cold Brew Yerba Mate](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-cold-brew-yerba-mate-ratio-time-and-the-gear-that-works?hsLang=en).

**Rinse it after every session** and let it dry open. Mate leaves residue, and a thermos that sits closed and damp starts to smell. The same goes double for your gourd, which I cover in [Blog: More Mold in Your Mate Gourd?](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/mold-in-your-mate-gourd?hsLang=en)

## The Bottom Line

Get the [Stanley Classic 1.1 qt](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FZX93K?tag=joshcaliguire-20) and add a [pico de mate stopper](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BXZ6GNKW?tag=joshcaliguire-20). It will outlast your gourd, your bombilla, and probably your car.

Giving one as a gift? Pair it with a gourd and a kilo of yerba. More ideas in [Blog: Gifts for Yerba Mate Lovers](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/gifts-for-yerba-mate-lovers?hsLang=en).

Mate is meant to be shared. A thermos that keeps the water right is what keeps the round going.
