# Can You Make Matcha in an AeroPress? Not Worth Trying.

I research and test everything I recommend. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission on purchases through my links. Your price stays the same, and I get to keep my matcha tin full. Win-win.

Short answer: technically yes. Practically, no. And the reason why tells you something important about what matcha actually is.

## What Makes Matcha Different from Other Teas

Most teas are infusions. You put leaves in water, let compounds dissolve into the liquid, then remove the leaves. The tea you drink is just the water, carrying flavour and caffeine.

Matcha works differently. The leaves are stone-ground into a very fine powder, and when you add water and whisk, you end up actually 'eating' the tea.

That's why matcha has a thicker texture, a richer flavour, and a more intense caffeine and L-theanine hit than steeped green tea. The powder stays in the cup with you.

This distinction matters a lot when you start thinking about brewing equipment.

## Why the AeroPress Doesn't Work for Matcha

The AeroPress is designed to filter out solids. That's the whole point of the paper filter (or metal filter) at the bottom. Grounds go in, liquid comes out, solids stay behind.

When you put matcha powder in an AeroPress and press, the filter catches most of it. You end up with thin, greenish water that's missing the body, the umami, and the texture that make matcha worth drinking. It's not a preparation method that doesn't agree with matcha.

It actively works against what matcha is.

Even a metal AeroPress filter doesn't save you here. Metal filters let more fines through than paper, which might seem like an improvement, but you're still pressing matcha through an extraction process designed for something else. The pressure and the filtering just aren't what this preparation calls for.

You also miss out on the foam. That frothy layer on top of a well-made matcha isn't just aesthetic. It's what you get when the powder and water are properly aerated through whisking, and it's part of what makes the texture of matcha so distinct.

## What to Use Instead

Matcha doesn't need much gear. What it does need is the right gear.

**A fine-mesh sieve or sifter**

Before you add any water, sift your matcha powder through a fine-mesh sieve into your bowl or cup. Matcha clumps easily, and those clumps won't break up just from whisking. Sifting first means your powder disperses evenly in the water, which gives you a smoother drink and a better foam.

**A bamboo whisk (chasen)**

A bamboo whisk is purpose-built to suspend matcha powder in water without crushing or filtering it. The tines create a foam and keep the powder distributed throughout the liquid. A regular kitchen whisk can get you part of the way there, but the chasen's shape and flexibility make a real difference.

**The right water temperature**

This one's easy to get wrong. Boiling water scorches matcha and brings out a harsh, bitter edge. You want water around 70°C (160°F), which is hot but not bubbling. A temperature-controlled kettle makes this effortless. [My previous post](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/time-and-temperature?hsLang=en)has a breakdown of ideal temperatures for different teas if you want the full picture.

## How to Actually Make Matcha

Here's the process I use:

**Sift first.** Put 1 to 2 grams of matcha through a fine-mesh sieve into your bowl. Skip this step and you'll spend the next minute chasing clumps.

**Add a small amount of warm water.** Start with about 30ml of 70°C water. This is your concentrate before you thin it out.

**Whisk in a W or M motion.** Move quickly and stay near the surface. You're trying to build foam and suspension, not stir a pot. Thirty to sixty seconds is usually enough.

**Add the rest of your water.** Top up with another 60 to 80ml of the same temperature water. Taste and adjust.

That's it. No press, no filter, no fuss.

## The Takeaway on Matcha and the AeroPress

The AeroPress is genuinely one of the most versatile pieces of brewing equipment out there. I use mine a lot and have had good results with a lot of different things.

The filter that makes the AeroPress useful for coffee is exactly what works against matcha. When you understand that matcha is a suspended powder and not an infusion, the right tools make more sense.

Enjoy your tea!
