# Can You Put Yerba Mate in a Keurig? Yes, With a Refillable Pod (Plus Better Options)

*I research and test everything I recommend. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission on purchases through my links. Your price stays the same, and I get to keep my gourd full. Win-win.*
Can you put yerba mate in a Keurig? **Yes, with a refillable pod.** Fill it with loose yerba, pop it in, and brew like coffee. It's worth a try if a Keurig is what you've got on the counter.
Just know going in that it makes a **lighter cup** than mate brewed other ways. Below is how to get the best mate out of a Keurig, plus a few other pieces of coffee gear you might already own that do it better.
## What You Need: A Refillable K-Cup
**[Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Filter](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0737B6HGR?tag=joshcaliguire-20)**
Keurig's own refillable pod works in most of their brewers, including the K-Mini, K-Classic, K-Select and K-Elite. It has a **mesh filter and two fill lines**, one for a cup and one for a travel mug. Check that your model is on the compatibility list before you buy. [Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0737B6HGR?tag=joshcaliguire-20).
**[Perfect Pod EZ-Cup Paper Filters](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007AVZQ1U?tag=joshcaliguire-20)**
Here's the trick. Yerba mate has a lot of **fine powder** mixed in with the leaves, and it slips right through a mesh pod into your cup. These little paper liners sit inside a reusable pod, catch the dust, and lift out when you're done. Cleaner cup, easier cleanup. [Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007AVZQ1U?tag=joshcaliguire-20).
**Don't have a Keurig yet?** If you're shopping for one and want it to pull double duty for coffee and the occasional mate, the classic model is the one I'd point to. The [Keurig K-Classic](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018UQ5AMS?tag=joshcaliguire-20) is simple, works with the My K-Cup pod, and has three cup sizes, so you can pick the smallest one for a stronger mate.

**Price range:** about $110 to $140. [Check for current prices](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018UQ5AMS?tag=joshcaliguire-20).
Short on counter space or budget? The slimmer [Keurig K-Express](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09715G57M?tag=joshcaliguire-20) usually runs about $60 to $80. [Check for current prices](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09715G57M?tag=joshcaliguire-20).
## How to Brew Yerba Mate in a Keurig
1. **Run one cycle of plain water** to flush out leftover coffee flavor.
2. **Line the pod with a paper filter** and fill it with yerba up to the top fill line. Pack it a little more than you would coffee.
3. **Choose the smallest cup size.** Less water means a stronger cup. Use the "strong" button if your brewer has one.
4. **Brew it twice through the same pod** if it comes out too light. A second, short brew pulls out more flavor.
5. **Rinse the pod right away.** Wet yerba left sitting gets musty fast.
## Why Keurig Mate Comes Out Weak (and a Little Bitter)
Two reasons. First, a Keurig pushes water through the pod in **under a minute**. Yerba mate likes more time to open up, so a quick pass makes a thin cup.
Second, Keurigs brew hot, close to the temperature you'd use for coffee. Mate tastes best around **160 to 180°F**, and hotter water pulls out the bitter side of the leaf. If your cup tastes harsh, that's why. More fixes here: [Blog: How to Make Yerba Maté Less Bitter](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-make-yerba-mat%C3%A9-less-bitter?hsLang=en).
A few brands do sell pre-filled yerba mate pods, often flavored. They're convenient, but loose yerba in a refillable pod gives you a lot more choice and costs less per cup.
## Better Ways to Brew Mate With Coffee Gear
If you like the idea of mate without a gourd, these do a better job than a Keurig. I ranked all of them in [Blog: 4 Ways to Brew Yerba Mate with Coffee Gear You Already Own (Ranked)](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/4-ways-to-brew-yerba-mate-with-the-coffee-gear-you-already-own-ranked?hsLang=en).
**1. [AeroPress](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3KDC3FJ?tag=joshcaliguire-20) (my favorite)**
You control the water temperature and the steep time, and the paper filter catches all the dust. It makes a **clean, strong cup of mate in about a minute**. The [AeroPress Clear](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3KDC3FJ?tag=joshcaliguire-20) is great at home, and the [AeroPress Go](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YVL8SF3?tag=joshcaliguire-20) packs into its own mug for travel. My method: [Blog: Yerba Mate AeroPress: The Cleanest Brew You're Not Making Yet](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/yerba-mate-aeropress-the-cleanest-brew-youre-not-making-yet?hsLang=en).
**2. A drip coffee maker with a paper filter**
****
Need a whole pot for the office or a group? A drip machine with a paper filter handles yerba well and **makes several cups at once**. Step by step: [Blog: How to Brew Yerba Mate in a Drip Coffee Maker](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-brew-yerba-mate-in-a-drip-coffee-maker?hsLang=en).
**3. [French press](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00008XEWG?tag=joshcaliguire-20)**
It works and it's easy, but the metal mesh lets the fine yerba powder through, so expect a **muddier cup**. Pour it through a paper filter if that bugs you. The [Bodum Chambord](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00008XEWG?tag=joshcaliguire-20) is the classic. Pros and cons: [Blog: Yerba Mate French Press: Recipe & Pros/Cons](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/yerba-mate-french-press?hsLang=en).
**4. Cold brew**
****
No machine at all. Yerba and cold water in a jar in the fridge overnight gives you **smooth, never-bitter mate** ready to pour.
My ratio: [Blog: Cold Brew Yerba Mate: Ratio, Steep Time & Gear That Works](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-cold-brew-yerba-mate-ratio-time-and-the-gear-that-works?hsLang=en).
## All in all...
A Keurig with a refillable pod and a paper liner will make yerba mate, and it's a fine way to try it with what you already own. If you end up loving it, **an AeroPress is the upgrade**, and a gourd and bombilla are the real thing.

**Homework:** try one pod of mate tomorrow morning instead of coffee. Then tell me how the afternoon felt.
