Yerba Mate

# How Much Caffeine Is in Yerba Mate Compared to Coffee?

![Yerba mate in a silver-rimmed gourd with a bombilla on an outdoor marble table](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_fill,ar_16:9,g_auto,w_1200/f_auto,q_auto/blog/yerba-mate-caffeine-vs-coffee/yerba-mate-gourd-on-marble-table-outdoors-hero)

I research and test everything I recommend. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission on purchases through my links. Your price stays the same, and I get to buy more yerba for the gourd. Win-win.

**Short answer:** an 8-ounce cup of yerba mate has roughly **70 to 85 mg of caffeine**. An 8-ounce cup of brewed coffee has about **96 mg**. Cup for cup, coffee wins by a little.

But almost nobody drinks mate one cup at a time. **A traditional gourd gets refilled over and over**, and a full session can easily match or beat a big mug of coffee. How much caffeine you get from yerba mate depends far more on how you drink it than on the leaf itself.

## Yerba Mate vs Coffee vs Tea: Caffeine per Cup

Here's how yerba mate caffeine stacks up against the drinks you already know, per 8-ounce cup:

| Drink (8 oz) | Caffeine |
| --- | --- |
| Brewed coffee | about 96 mg |
| **Yerba mate** | **about 70 to 85 mg** |
| Black tea | about 47 mg |
| Green tea | about 28 mg |

The coffee and tea numbers come from the [Mayo Clinic's caffeine chart](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/caffeine/art-20049372). The mate number is a typical estimate for a brewed cup, and it swings a lot with how much leaf you use and how hot your water is. So does coffee, for what it's worth. A strong cup can run close to 200 mg.

The takeaway: **yerba mate sits between coffee and black tea**, much closer to coffee. If tea feels too gentle and coffee feels like too much, mate lands right in the middle.

## Why a Gourd of Mate Can Out-Caffeinate Your Coffee

The traditional way to drink mate is a gourd packed most of the way with leaf, sipped through a bombilla, and topped up with hot water again and again. Researchers at the University of Illinois, the team behind the [Heck and de Mejia yerba mate review](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18034743/), describe a typical gourd as about **50 grams of leaf refilled with up to a liter of water** over a session.

That's a lot of leaf. A coffee scoop of ground beans is around 10 grams. When you refill a gourd ten or fifteen times over a morning, **the caffeine adds up to more than one cup of coffee**, even though each sip is milder.

![A gourd packed with yerba mate, ready for a long session of refills](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/v1792042539/blog/yerba-mate-caffeine-vs-coffee/packed-yerba-mate-gourd-close-up.jpg)

The upside is pacing. A gourd session spreads that caffeine across an hour or two instead of one fast mug. That's a big part of why so many people describe mate energy as steadier.

## Is "Mateine" Different From Caffeine?

You'll see the word "mateine" on some packaging and websites. **It's the same molecule as caffeine.** The different name comes from marketing.

What mate does have is a little company. Alongside caffeine, it contains small amounts of **theobromine** (the same compound in chocolate) and **theophylline**, plus a lot of polyphenols. Those may be part of why the buzz feels different to many drinkers. I've found mate a few notches cleaner than coffee for long stretches of focused work, and I wrote about that in [Blog: Yerba Mate: The Best Coffee Alternative for Deep Work and Focus](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/yerba-mate-deep-work?hsLang=en).

If you want the full experiment, I swapped coffee for mate for a month: [Blog: I Switched My Morning Coffee with Yerba Mate. Here's What Happened.](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/i-switched-my-morning-coffee-with-yerba-mate-heres-what-happened?hsLang=en)

## How to Get More (or Less) Caffeine From Your Mate

You have more control over mate caffeine than you might think:

- **Use more or less leaf.** This is the biggest lever. A heaping gourd and a light AeroPress scoop are very different drinks.
- **Count your refills.** Every top-up pulls more caffeine out. Stop after a few if you're sensitive.
- **Watch the temperature.** Hotter water extracts more of everything, including bitterness. Around 160 to 180°F is the sweet spot. A variable temperature kettle makes it easy: [Blog: Best Kettle for Yerba Mate](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/best-kettle-for-yerba-mate?hsLang=en).
- **Try it cold.** Cold water pulls caffeine out more slowly, so cold brew is a gentler option: [Blog: Cold Brew Yerba Mate](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-cold-brew-yerba-mate-ratio-time-and-the-gear-that-works?hsLang=en).
- **Brew one measured cup.** If you want a predictable dose, skip the gourd and brew a single cup in an AeroPress: [Blog: Yerba Mate AeroPress](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/yerba-mate-aeropress-the-cleanest-brew-youre-not-making-yet?hsLang=en).

## How Much Is Too Much?

The Mayo Clinic puts the safe limit for most healthy adults at **up to 400 mg of caffeine a day**. That's about four cups of coffee, or a long gourd session plus an afternoon refill if you're not paying attention.

If you're pregnant, sensitive to caffeine, or on medication, check with your doctor. And if mate is keeping you up, cut it off by early afternoon. Caffeine sticks around for hours.

## So Should You Drink Mate or Coffee?

My take: **reach for coffee when you want a fast, strong hit, and reach for mate when you want to work steadily for a few hours.** Mate gives you nearly as much caffeine, spread out over a longer ritual, with a flavor all its own.

If you're new to it, start with a smooth, low-dust yerba. [Playadito](https://amzn.to/4hNavFk) is the one I recommend most. And if the taste is the hurdle, this helps: [Blog: How to Make Yerba Maté Less Bitter](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-make-yerba-mat%C3%A9-less-bitter?hsLang=en).

## Quick Questions

**Does yerba mate have more caffeine than coffee?**
Per cup, no. Coffee has a bit more. Per gourd session with lots of refills, mate often has more.

**Does yerba mate have more caffeine than green tea?**
Yes, usually two to three times as much per cup.

**Is there caffeine-free yerba mate?**
Decaf yerba mate exists but is hard to find. If you want a caffeine-free evening drink, an herbal tea is the easier swap. Here are my picks: [Blog: Can't Sleep? These Are the 10 Teas Worth Trying](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/top-ten-night-teas?hsLang=en).
