# Is a Matcha Machine Worth It? The Cuzen Matcha Maker, Honestly

Josh Caliguire · Oct 20, 2026

![Cuzen Matcha Maker in black on a kitchen counter with a fresh matcha drink](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_fill,ar_16:9,g_auto,w_1200/f_auto,q_auto/blog/is-a-matcha-machine-worth-it/cuzen-matcha-maker-black-on-counter)

I research and test everything I recommend. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission on purchases through my links. Your price stays the same, and I get to keep my matcha tin full. Win-win.

**Short answer:** a matcha machine like the **Cuzen Matcha Maker** is worth it if you drink matcha almost every day, love lattes, and are happy using one brand's tea. It grinds whole leaves fresh and whisks them for you at the push of a button. But at about **$300 plus its own leaf refills**, it's a convenience buy. If you enjoy whisking, a good bamboo whisk and a tin of ceremonial matcha get you a great cup for a fraction of the price.

I love the ritual of whisking matcha by hand, and I've written a lot about it here. But I also get the appeal of a machine, especially on busy mornings. This post is my honest look at what a matcha machine does, what it really costs, and who it's for.

## What a Matcha Machine Actually Does

![Cuzen Matcha Maker dispensing freshly ground matcha into whirling water](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/is-a-matcha-machine-worth-it/cuzen-matcha-maker-whisking-matcha-shot)

Most people picture a matcha machine as a fancy whisk. The Cuzen is more interesting than that. **It starts with whole tea leaves, not powder.**

- **You pour a packet of whole-leaf tencha** (the shade-grown leaf matcha is made from) into the hopper on top.
- **A ceramic mill grinds it** into fine powder, right before you drink it.
- **The powder falls into a cup of water** that a magnetic stirrer is spinning, so it whisks itself.
- **You get a smooth matcha shot** in about a minute, ready to drink straight or turn into a latte.

The big idea is freshness. Matcha powder starts losing its color and aroma as soon as it's ground and opened. Grinding on demand keeps that bright, grassy sweetness. It's the same reason coffee people grind beans right before brewing.

## The Cuzen Matcha Maker

[![Cuzen Matcha Maker in white on a kitchen counter](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_pad,ar_1:1,b_white,w_800/f_auto,q_auto/blog/is-a-matcha-machine-worth-it/cuzen-matcha-maker-white-kitchen)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NY1CP2K?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

**Price range:** about $280 to $320 for the starter kit. [Check for current prices](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NY1CP2K?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

The Cuzen is the matcha machine most people mean when they search for one. The starter kit comes with the machine, **three sample leaf packets** (Premium, Signature and Latte blends) and a guide, with a one-year warranty. It comes in white and black. In late 2025, Cuzen also added a **hojicha kit**, so the same machine can grind roasted green tea too.

Reviewers like how easy it is and how smooth the shot tastes, with no clumps or sludge at the bottom. The common complaint is the price, and the fact that it's built around Cuzen's tea. [Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NY1CP2K?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

## The Real Cost: Machine Plus Leaves

![Whole-leaf tencha tea leaves used in a matcha machine](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/is-a-matcha-machine-worth-it/whole-leaf-tencha-for-matcha-machine)

Here's the math that actually decides whether a matcha machine is worth it.

- **The machine:** about $300 up front.
- **The leaves:** Cuzen's 20-gram packets run about $15 to $30, depending on the blend. Cuzen says that works out to **about $1 per shot**, a little less with a subscription.
- **Matcha by hand:** a whisk set is about $25, and good ceremonial matcha is about $22 to $28 for 40 grams. At 1.5 to 2 grams a bowl, that's roughly **$1 to $1.40 a cup**.
- **Cafe matcha lattes:** often $5 to $7 each.

So per cup, the Cuzen costs about the same as making matcha by hand with good powder. The difference is the $300 machine. **If you're replacing a daily cafe latte, it pays for itself in a couple of months.** If you already whisk at home, you're paying for convenience and freshness.

**Price range:** about $15 to $30 per 20-gram packet, depending on the blend. [Check for current prices](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GDDNTTT7?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

## What I Like and What I'm Not So Sure About..

![Iced matcha drinks made with a matcha machine](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/is-a-matcha-machine-worth-it/iced-matcha-drinks-from-matcha-machine)

**What I like:**

- **Fresh-ground flavor.** Grinding whole leaf right before drinking is the best way to keep matcha vibrant.
- **No whisking skill needed.** Getting smooth, clump-free matcha by hand takes practice. The machine skips the learning curve.
- **Great for lattes and iced drinks.** A shot plus milk or sparkling water is fast and consistent.
- **It looks beautiful on a counter.** This matters more than people admit.

**Not so sure...**

- **You're locked into their tea.** You can't use your favorite matcha powder, and reviewers note other teas can void the warranty.
- **The texture is different.** You get a smooth shot, without the thick, fine foam of a well-whisked bowl. For straight ceremonial matcha, a bamboo chasen still wins.
- **Leaves go stale in the hopper** after about a month, so it suits people who drink matcha often.
- **It's one more appliance.** If counter space is tight, a whisk takes up none.

## Matcha Machine vs Bamboo Whisk vs Electric Whisk

![Whisking foamy matcha by hand in a ceramic chawan](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/matcha-starter-kit/whisking-foamy-matcha-in-a-chawan)

| | Cuzen machine | Bamboo whisk | Electric whisk |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Up-front cost** | About $300 | About $20 to $30 for a set | About $12 to $40 |
| **Tea** | Cuzen leaf packets only | Any matcha | Any matcha |
| **Freshness** | Ground to order | Depends on your tin | Depends on your tin |
| **Texture** | Smooth shot | Thick, fine foam | Good for lattes |
| **Effort** | One button | A minute of whisking, a little practice | A few seconds |
| **Best for** | Daily latte drinkers who want zero fuss | People who love the ritual | Lattes on a budget |

## Good Alternatives to a Matcha Machine

![Matcha drinks and breakfast on a table](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/is-a-matcha-machine-worth-it/matcha-machine-breakfast-flatlay)

If $300 feels like a lot, these get you most of the way for much less.

### Matcha Mate Electric Bamboo Whisk

[![Matcha Mate electric bamboo whisk spinning a chasen](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_crop,w_0.48,h_0.58,g_center/c_pad,ar_1:1,b_white,w_800/f_auto,q_auto/blog/is-a-matcha-machine-worth-it/matcha-mate-electric-bamboo-whisk-raw)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GJTZJQDK?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

**Price range:** about $30 to $40. [Check for current prices](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GJTZJQDK?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

A clever middle ground. It's a rechargeable handle that **spins a real bamboo chasen** in the traditional pattern, so you get the bamboo whisk's texture without the wrist work. It comes with adapters for different whisk sizes. [See it on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GJTZJQDK?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

### Jade Leaf Electric Whisk

[![Jade Leaf electric matcha whisk and milk frother](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_pad,ar_1:1,b_white,w_800/f_auto,q_auto/blog/gifts-for-matcha-lovers/jade-leaf-electric-matcha-whisk)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097QJ9HL4?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

**Price range:** about $12 to $20. [Check for current prices](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097QJ9HL4?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

The budget pick for latte drinkers. A small handheld whisk that blends matcha smooth in seconds and froths milk too. [Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097QJ9HL4?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

### A Classic Matcha Set

[![TEANAGOO matcha set with bowl, bamboo whisk and scoop](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_pad,ar_1:1,b_white,w_800/f_auto,q_auto/blog/matcha-starter-kit/teanagoo-7-piece-matcha-starter-kit)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09DFZYPJ1?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

**Price range:** about $22 to $30. [Check for current prices](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09DFZYPJ1?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

If you want to learn the ritual, start here: a bowl with a pouring spout, a 100-prong bamboo whisk, a scoop and a sifter. Pair it with a good ceremonial matcha like [Naoki Superior Blend](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L2GW7SI?tag=joshcaliguire-20). I walk through every tool in [Blog: Matcha Starter Kit: Everything You Need to Whisk Perfect, Foamy Matcha at Home](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/matcha-starter-kit?hsLang=en). [Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09DFZYPJ1?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

### For Latte Lovers: A Great Frother

[![Breville Milk Cafe milk frother for matcha lattes](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_pad,ar_1:1,b_white,w_800/f_auto,q_auto/blog/milk-frother-matcha/breville-milk-cafe-frother-for-matcha-latte)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004RCNJ9Q?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

**Price range:** about $180 to $210. [Check for current prices](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004RCNJ9Q?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

Most of what makes a cafe matcha latte feel special is the milk. If lattes are your thing, a great frother might do more for you than a matcha machine. The Breville Milk Cafe is my top pick. I compared five in [Blog: Best Milk Frother for Matcha Lattes](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/best-milk-frother-for-matcha-latte?hsLang=en). [Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004RCNJ9Q?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

## Who Should Buy a Matcha Machine

![Cuzen Matcha Maker in black next to a glass of matcha](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/is-a-matcha-machine-worth-it/cuzen-matcha-maker-black-on-counter)

- **Buy it** if you drink a matcha latte most days, currently buy them at a cafe, and like the idea of one-button fresh matcha.
- **Buy it as a gift** for the matcha lover who has everything. It's a showpiece. More gift ideas in [Blog: Gifts for Matcha Lovers](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/gifts-for-matcha-lovers?hsLang=en).
- **Skip it** if you love the ritual of whisking, want to try different matcha brands, or drink matcha only a few times a week.

Whatever you choose, water temperature still matters. Matcha likes water around 175°F, not boiling. Here's how to get it right: [Blog: Best Kettle for Matcha](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/best-kettle-for-matcha?hsLang=en). And if you're curious about the buzz, [Blog: How Much Caffeine Is Actually in Matcha Compared to Coffee?](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-much-caffeine-is-actually-in-matcha-compared-to-coffee?hsLang=en) breaks it down.

## Quick Questions

![Matcha bowl and bamboo whisk ready for whisking](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto,w_1200/blog/matcha-starter-kit/matcha-starter-kit-bowl-and-whisk)

**Can you use regular matcha powder in the Cuzen?**
No. The Cuzen grinds whole tea leaves (tencha) in its ceramic mill, so it's built around Cuzen's own leaf packets. Reviewers note that using other teas can void the warranty.

**How much does a cup of matcha cost with the Cuzen?**
Cuzen puts it at about $1 per shot with its leaf refills, and a little less on a subscription. That's close to what you'd spend on good matcha powder at home, and far less than a cafe latte.

**Does the Cuzen make a matcha latte?**
It makes a concentrated matcha shot. You add milk (frothed or iced) yourself to turn it into a latte, the same way you would with an espresso shot.

**Is an electric matcha whisk as good as a bamboo chasen?**
For lattes, yes. For straight matcha with a thick, fine foam, a bamboo chasen still wins. Some electric whisks, like the Matcha Mate, actually spin a bamboo chasen for you, which is a nice middle ground.

**Homework:** count how many matcha lattes you bought last month. Multiply by what you paid. That number will tell you pretty quickly whether a matcha machine is a splurge or a savings plan.
