# Tea Setup Under $50: Kettle, Teapot & Mug

Josh Caliguire · Oct 2, 2026

![tea setup for under $50](https://res.cloudinary.com/cekiuehr/image/upload/c_fill,ar_16:9,g_auto,w_1200/f_auto,q_auto/tea-setup-under-50-kettle-teapot-mug.jpg)

I research everything I recommend. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission on purchases through my links. Your price stays the same, and I get to buy more tea gear. Win-win.

You can build a proper tea setup for under $50. Three things: a kettle, a teapot, and a mug. That's it.

I drink black tea with milk, herbals by themselves, and all sorts of bags and loose leaf varieties.

This whole set comes to $46.92 at today's prices.

If you want to go further with your setup down the line, I've also put together a guide to [building out a full tea bar at home](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/tea-bar-setup-at-home?hsLang=en), but this post is just the essentials.

**1. The Kettle: [Hamilton Beach 1 Liter Glass Electric Kettle](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074T6KZRK?tag=joshcaliguire-20)**
*$22.95*

[![Hamilton Beach 1 Liter glass electric tea kettle with blue light](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71QYn+FKahL._AC_SL1500_.jpg)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074T6KZRK?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

Get an electric one. It's faster than the stove, and it shuts itself off when it boils. This one is clear glass with a blue light, 1500 watts, auto shut-off and boil-dry protection. It holds 1 liter, about four mugs of tea. 4.5 stars from more than 34,000 ratings.

If you want to go nicer on the kettle specifically, I've ranked five worth considering in [Ideal Electric Kettles for Tea: 2026 Edition](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/ideal-electric-kettles-for-tea-2026-edition?hsLang=en), from budget to premium.

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074T6KZRK?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

**2. The Teapot: [Hiware 27 oz Glass Teapot with Infuser](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZOLU1VI?tag=joshcaliguire-20)**
*$14.99*

[![Hiware 27 oz glass teapot with removable stainless steel infuser](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71hTKsRtbqL._AC_SL1500_.jpg)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZOLU1VI?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

Borosilicate glass, so it handles boiling water, and it's stovetop safe. The stainless steel infuser lifts out, so you can brew loose leaf or drop in a few bags. Glass lets you watch the color of the tea, which tells you when it's ready. It holds 27 oz, about three cups. 4.4 stars from more than 6,600 ratings.

You can find it here: [Hiware 27 oz Glass Teapot](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZOLU1VI?tag=joshcaliguire-20).

**3. The Mug: [Urbanstrive 16 oz Ceramic Mug](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TCDT1TQ?tag=joshcaliguire-20)**
*$8.98*

[![Urbanstrive 16 oz white ceramic mug](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/411mjzj45rL._AC_SL1500_.jpg)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TCDT1TQ?tag=joshcaliguire-20)

Go big. Black tea with milk needs room, and 16 oz leaves space for the milk. Plain white ceramic, dishwasher and microwave safe. 4.7 stars from more than 2,800 ratings.

If your tea keeps going cold before you finish the mug, I also tested the Ember Mug for this exact problem in [Is the Ember Mug Worth It for Tea? (2026)](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/is-the-ember-mug-worth-it-for-tea-2026?hsLang=en), though it costs a lot more than $8.98.

**The total**

Kettle $22.95, teapot $14.99, mug $8.98. That's $46.92, with about $3 left over. Tea is extra.

**Do you need a teapot?**

No. A mug and a kettle will get you a good cup. Pour the water over the bag, wait 3 to 4 minutes, remove, add milk.

So why buy one? A pot keeps tea hot for a second cup, and it's better for two people. It also makes loose leaf easy. If you drink one cup at a time from bags, skip it and put the $15 toward better tea.

**Tea bags or loose leaf?**

Either one works with this setup. Bags are easier. Loose leaf usually tastes better. Start with bags, and move to loose leaf when you want more flavor. For black tea with milk, you want a strong, brisk blend. Here are my picks: [Best Black Tea Bags on Amazon: 13 English Breakfast and Earl Grey Picks](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/best-black-tea-bags-on-amazon-13-english-breakfast-and-earl-grey-picks?hsLang=en).

**How I make it**

Boil the water. Pour it over the tea in the pot or mug. Wait 3 to 4 minutes. Add milk, and honey if you like.

**Bonus: spend the $50 on gong fu cha instead**

Not a milk tea person? Skip the kettle, pot and mug, and spend the $50 on a gong fu setup instead. You brew small amounts of loose leaf many times over, so one handful of leaves lasts all afternoon. It suits oolong, pu-erh and good green tea.

<https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/yi-xing-vs-gaiwain-for-beginners?hsLang=en>[A Gong fu set used to cost upwards of $200. Now this epic set is $50. Here's why its a steal of a deal.](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/gong-fu-cha-tea-ceremony-set-for-beginners?hsLang=en)

You'll still need a way to heat water, so this option works best if you already own a kettle.

Start with the kettle and the mug. Add the teapot when you want it.

Homework: Look in your cabinet tonight. If you already own a decent mug and a kettle, spend the whole budget on better tea.

Much love, Josh
