What's in Sleepytime Tea That Makes You Sleepy? Every Ingredient

I research and test everything I recommend. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission on purchases through my links. Your price stays the same, and I will save up for some more sleepytime. Fair trade.

What is in Sleepytime tea that makes you sleepy? Eight ingredients in the classic, nine in Extra, and only one or two of them are doing the heavy lifting.

I already wrote about whether this tea works at all: Does Sleepytime Tea Actually Work? This is the closer look at the box itself, ingredient by ingredient, so you know exactly what you're steeping.

What's in classic Sleepytime tea

Chamomile
The lead ingredient, and the one doing most of the sedative work. It contains apigenin, a compound that binds to the same brain receptors as anti-anxiety medications, just far more mildly.

Spearmint
Mostly there for flavor and a little digestive soothing. Not sedating on its own.

Lemongrass
Adds a citrusy top note. Traditionally used for mild calming effects, though the evidence here is thinner than for chamomile.

Tilia flowers (linden)
A classic European sleep-and-calm herb, often used for nervous tension.

Blackberry leaves, orange blossoms, hawthorn, rosebuds
These round out the flavor and color more than they contribute to drowsiness, though hawthorn has some traditional use for relaxation.

So what actually makes you sleepy?

Realistically, it's chamomile doing 80% of the work, with linden as a supporting player. The rest of the blend is flavor and marketing as much as it is pharmacology. That's not a knock on the tea, it's just useful to know what you're actually relying on.

I have been a huge fan of sleepytime for my evenings, and always have a box or two stocked. Even for evening time visiting with friends.

It hits the spot, makes me sleepy naturally, and gets me ready. I have had so much by now that the flavor tells my brain.... its sleepytime!

What's different in Sleepytime Extra

Extra adds valerian root, the ninth ingredient, and it's the whole reason the "Extra" version exists. Valerian has more clinical research behind it than most of the Sleepytime blend, with some studies showing modest improvements in sleep onset. It also tastes noticeably more medicinal, which is the tradeoff.

Which one should you buy?

Classic Sleepytime
Best for: a gentle wind-down tea you could drink most nights without it feeling like medicine. About $15.69 on Amazon for bulk, enough for a few months.

Sleepytime Extra (the stronger option)
Best for: nights when you actually need help shutting your brain off, not just a cozy ritual. Around $4.65 for a smaller box.

If that sounds like what you need, you can find it here.

A quick safety note

Valerian isn't recommended if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking sedatives or other medications that affect the central nervous system. Chamomile can also interact with blood thinners. If any of that applies to you, check with a doctor before making Sleepytime Extra a nightly habit.

How to brew it so it works better

Steep one bag in hot water for 4 to 6 minutes. Shorter than that and you're mostly drinking warm water with a hint of chamomile. If you've been getting a thin, flat cup, it's worth checking your water temperature and steep time against what I cover in Why Your Tea Tastes Bitter (It's Time and Temperature), since the same principles apply even to a bag you're not trying to get bitter.

If your kettle is part of the problem, I put together a guide to the best electric kettles for tea in 2026, and if you're building out a full nighttime setup, Tea Setup Under $50 covers the basics without overspending.

If you want more options beyond Celestial Seasonings, I ranked my favorites here: Top Ten Night Teas.

Tonight's homework: steep a cup of whichever one matches what you actually need, not what's in the cabinet out of habit, and give it the full 4 to 6 minutes before you decide it isn't working.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sleepytime tea have caffeine?
No. Every ingredient in both versions is naturally caffeine-free.

What actually makes Sleepytime tea make you sleepy?
Mostly chamomile, with linden as a smaller supporting ingredient. Extra adds valerian root, which has the strongest research behind it of anything in either blend.

Does Sleepytime tea contain melatonin?
No. It's a herbal blend, not a melatonin supplement. Any drowsiness comes from the herbs themselves, not added melatonin.

Is it okay to drink Sleepytime tea every night?
For most healthy adults, yes, the classic blend is gentle enough for nightly use. Extra, with valerian, is better reserved for nights you actually need it rather than as a nightly default.
