# Yerba Mate French Press: Recipe & Pros/Cons

Short answer: yes, technically. But you're going to end up with a cup of muddy, gritty, dusty mate that you probably won't want to finish, let alone make again.

If you're searching for how to brew yerba mate in a French press, I want to save you some time. I've been down this road. I've tried everything. And I'll tell you exactly why it doesn't work, what else I tried that also didn't work, and what actually does.

**The problem with French press and yerba mate**

A French press uses a metal mesh plunger to separate your grounds from your brew. It works beautifully for coffee because coffee grounds are coarse enough that the mesh catches them and holds them back. Well, most of the time.

Yerba mate is a completely different animal.

Loose leaf yerba mate is incredibly fine and powdery. It's not like tea leaves, and it's not like coffee grounds. When you press a French press on mate, that metal mesh has no chance. The powder blows right through it and straight into your cup. What you're left with is a murky, cloudy, dusty brew with a layer of sediment sitting at the bottom. Every sip gets progressively grittier. The last inch of the cup is basically mud.

Honestly, this happens to me with coffee in a French press too. I've always ended up chewing the bottom of the cup. For mate, it's even worse because the particles are so much finer.

**I tried everything else before I figured this out**

When I first started drinking yerba mate at home, I knew I wanted a cleaner cup than what a gourd and bombilla give you. The metal straw filters out the big stuff, but you're still drinking a lot of dust through it, sitting in your mouth, coating your throat. I'm a paper filter guy at heart. I wanted clean and clear.

So I tried pour over. I tried a normal coffee pot. And I tried French press.

Here's what I learned about any gravity-based method: yerba mate is so fine and powdery that the second it hits water, it coats whatever surface it touches. Every pore in the paper. Every hole in the filter. The whole thing seals up and the water just stops moving. With pour over, I was standing there staring at it, waiting for it to drip. Nothing. With the drip machine, same story.

The French press at least lets the brew happen, but as I said, the metal mesh just lets everything through anyway.

I nearly gave up on paper filtering mate entirely.

**Why the AeroPress actually works**

The AeroPress is different from every other method I tried because you're not relying on gravity. You push. You apply pressure through the plunger and force the brew through the paper filter. Still filtered well, and within 45 seconds!

![Screenshot 2026-07-20 at 11.42.44 PM](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-07-20%20at%2011.42.44%20PM.png?width=1200&height=785&name=Screenshot%202026-07-20%20at%2011.42.44%20PM.png)

What comes out is clean. No dust, no particles, no gritty mouthfeel. Just mate, properly filtered, ready to drink.

I've been using this method for a while now and I will never go back. I brew it, push it through, and pour it straight into my thermos. It stays hot for hours. No babysitting the temperature. No refilling a gourd every few minutes. I bring it to my desk and I work.

You can read the full breakdown of my setup in [Blog: Yerba Mate AeroPress: The Cleanest Brew You're Not Making Yet](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/yerba-mate-aeropress-the-cleanest-brew-youre-not-making-yet?hsLang=en).

**The other thing the AeroPress unlocks**

One of my favorite things about brewing mate this way is what it opens up for customization. With a gourd and a bombilla, you're pretty locked into the traditional experience, which is great, but there's not a lot of room to play.

![Screenshot 2026-07-20 at 11.42.17 PM](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-07-20%20at%2011.42.17%20PM.png?width=1200&height=800&name=Screenshot%202026-07-20%20at%2011.42.17%20PM.png)

When you're working with a clean, filtered cup, you can do whatever you want with it.

I'll sometimes add cinnamon and milk and a little honey. Sometimes I squeeze in some fresh lemon, which the heat draws sweetness out of in a way that beautifully balances the bitterness of the mate. You can sweeten it however you like. You can pour it over ice. You can make a mate latte.

The whole world opens up. If you're new to mate and the intensity is a lot, milk in particular makes it creamy and approachable in a way that makes it easy to stick with while your palate adjusts.

I write more about all of this in [Blog: How to Make Yerba Maté Less Bitter](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-make-yerba-mat%C3%A9-less-bitter?hsLang=en).

**So, can you use a French press for yerba mate?**

You can. But you'll end up with a dusty, murky cup and a layer of mud at the bottom, and you won't want to do it again. The metal mesh on a French press was never built for something as fine as mate, and there's no workaround for that. Gravity-based paper filter methods don't solve it either because the powder seals the filter before the water can move.

The AeroPress is the solution because pressure does what gravity can't. Paper filter, forced through under pressure, clean cup every time.

If you're just getting into mate and want the full backstory on why I switched from coffee in the first place, that's all in [Blog: I Switched My Morning Coffee with Yerba Mate. Here's What Happened.](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/i-switched-my-morning-coffee-with-yerba-mate-heres-what-happened?hsLang=en).

And if you're looking for where to start on the yerba itself, [here are the 10 bags I'd point a friend toward](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/top-10-yerba-mate-bags-on-amazon?hsLang=en).

Prefer your mate cold? Try [Blog: Cold Brew Yerba Mate: Ratio, Steep Time & Gear That Works](https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-cold-brew-yerba-mate-ratio-time-and-the-gear-that-works?hsLang=en).

Skip the French press. Get the AeroPress. You'll thank yourself.

Cheers,

Josh
