Quick rule: if your friend is new to mate, give a complete kit. If they already drink it every day, upgrade the thermos or the gourd, or just give them a kilo of really good yerba.
1. Cuopru Imperial Yerba Mate Gourd
The Imperial is the classic Argentine style: a calabash gourd wrapped in leather with a stainless rim and three little feet so it stands on a table. It comes with a bombilla and looks like a gift the second it's out of the box.

2. Stanley Classic 1.1 Quart Thermos
In South America the green Stanley is basically part of the mate kit. It holds water hot for hours, it's nearly indestructible, and the 1.1 quart size is enough for a long morning of refills. I wrote a whole post on why it's my pick. Check price on Amazon.
For a friend who shares mate with a group, the 2 quart version is worth the extra size.
3. Pico de Mate Stopper for Stanley

6. Stainless Steel Double-Wall Mate Cup

8. A Kilo of Good Yerba

10. Fellow Corvo EKG Pro Kettle
Boiling water burns yerba. Mate wants water around 160 to 175°F, and a kettle you can set to the degree makes filling the thermos foolproof. I love and trust Fellow, and I think the Corvo is the ideal kettle for most tea and mate drinkers.
